As with many of you, it was with shock and
dismay that we observed the destruction of the World Trade Center and the
attack on the Pentagon. The worst terrorist attack on the United States has
left Americans and the world in a state of disbelief.
We dedicate this special edition to the victims of this horrifying act, and to
their family and friends that continue to suffer. |

After the first shock of the attack passed, we,
as millions of others, went online to try to get the latest news. With the
congestion that ensued, one of the easier means of getting information occured
in the chat rooms and message boards that we frequent so often.
Initial reaction was almost unanimous - shock and grief that such a calamity
could occur in the United States. Worry about posters that lived or were
traveling in the area ensued, with frantic messages asking for reassurance that
they were OK. Brave souls living in the New York and D.C. area began signing in
with eye-witness accounts of the destruction. Others began citing stories told
secondhand from friends or relatives who were close to the impacts and had
managed to get online. News stories from those lucky enough to connect to a
news service were relayed to the boards. Chats began filling up as people
strove for more information, and as they sought comfort in numbers.
Inevitably, the talk turned to the Big Brother houseguests, and whether they
had been told about the events. Calls for shutting the show down and releasing
the "hampsters" were made. Some relief was found in the afternoon
when the houseguests were told part of the story, however many felt not enough
was told and that Big Brother should come clean. Numerous discussions raged on
what was the "right" thing for Arnold Shapiro Productions to do.
Hoaxes also began springing up - most notably the Nostradamus predictions of
the disaster (which was proven to be written several years ago as an example of
how easy it was sound prophetic - and was taken by others and modified to seem
even more prophetic), and the Canadian letter praising the U.S. which was
actually written in the 1970s. Scams also started cropping up - one particulary
nasty set being the links asking for Red Cross donations that were really setup
to steal people's credit card numbers.
A broad wave of patriotism emerged in the writings from the citizens of the
U.S., and was accompanied by a surge of support from the international
community. The general consensus from all being that this was a cowardly act
that could not go unpunished. |

Spending time in chat and on the message boards
was somewhat painful for us, in that the events of the past few days have set
everyone on edge. Almost every chat that we visited had a spirited conversation
going on, however each one of them degenerated somewhere along the line to the
point of name-calling and/or someone leaving the chat abruptly.
Similar signs were seen on the message boards, where moderators were having a
hard time keeping up with the discussions that ended up in flame wars. The gist
of most ended up being that someone wasn't reacting correctly to the tragedy
that had occurred.
We feel Kristii of Reality 411
had the right attitude when she stated on her board that everyone will react to
these events in their own way, and that you should not harass them for the way
they react and respond.
We hope all can follow this general rule. |

We have seen many ideas for supporting the United
States. Here are some of our favorites and we hope you participate:
- Today, Friday 14, wear Red, White, and Blue to show your support.
- Also today, at 7:00 p.m. step out your door, stop your car, or step out of
your establishment and light a candle. Show the world that North Americans are
strong and united together against terrorism.
- Donate to the Red Cross. Visit their website

Of all the posters that we saw during this time
of crisis, we found this one the most representative of the attitude of the
citiziens of the United States. Mishi of Elite TV, who is apparently in the medical
profession in Texas, has volunteered to go to New York City to help with the
emergency there. Though she has been put on hold at the moment, her courage and
willingness to sacrifice makes her this Special Edition's Favorite Poster.
And to all those others that have volunteered their time, money, goods, and
blood - thank you.
And if you see someone on the reality tv scene that you think should be
recognized for their efforts in these trying times, please write us and we will
make sure they receive due praise in our next issue. |
