Top 50 News

During our research into the Reality411, SendAGig, and Letz Talk controversy, we were contacted by a moderator and staunch supporter of Reality411 that gave us their view of the situation. It was with much suprise that we realized that the moderator was also the same person from Top 50 Network who, as Admin for the Top50Network had informed me that the Jokers Update site had not been removed from the list, and that our site had been removed and should be in the Reality TV Top 50 list instead of the Big Brother list.

When questioned about this, the moderator assured us that the position held with the Top 50 Network did not conflict with the position held as a board moderator on Reality411, and that the owner of Top 50 knows that they are a moderator on the site. We were also assured that the hits on the Top 50 are automated, that there is no way to alter any statistics for any website on the Top 50, and that there is no possible conflict of interest in the positions.

We contacted Top 50 Networks for comment, however we have not received a response as of this writing.

One thing that does puzzle us, however, is that the e-mails seem to indicate that the Admin is not the operator of the Big Brother, Survivor, and Reality TV Top 50 lists. We have not presented this question to Top 50 or the Admin, but we would like to know who the actual operator of these lists is.

Original Content, and those that would appropriate it

By MissMary - Editor RealityTVfans.com

I’ll be the first to admit when I started our site I wasn’t aware of copyright issues and how they worked. I was soon informed, in a very nice way, by a friend of mine that works in the newspaper biz. I figured that as long as you put a link to where you acquired the article, copying and pasting it was perfectly ok. Where I got this idea, I’m not sure, but I can only surmise it’s because of what I saw other sites doing. That was over a year ago. Since that time our site has solicited for original content writers to cover reality TV shows and specials, and received dozens of applications. We currently have about 30 authors that write for our site. These people work for free, and spend several hours not only watching the shows, but also watching them over again to write their recaps and/or editorials. I in turn as the editor, read them over and make any corrections or ‘editing’ as needed. The articles are then published to our site for visitor consumption. All in all it is a process, but a process we all do because we enjoy it. Our articles are picked up by major news feed sources on the Internet, which in turn is picked up by thousands of other sites looking for reality TV news. So what am I getting at? Well, the best way I can explain is by using an analogy that I hope all webmasters and visitors of other reality TV sites take to heart.

Amy

Once upon a time there was a little girl named Amy who lived in a small house far away in a town called Webville. Amy discovered at a young age that she could paint portraits quite well. Her parents took notice and realized she was a real child prodigy. Soon their friends noticed the lovely paintings all over the walls at Amy’s house. They told their friends, and their friends told more friends, and on and on it went. Soon many people were coming to look at Amy’s beautiful paintings. Every week Amy would paint a new portrait and more and more people from all over Webville would come to Amy’s house to see her work. She worked very hard; spending many hours to make all the visitors happy. Some of Amy’s parents’ friends said that they should charge admission for people to see Amy’s paintings because they could make a lot of money. However, her parents thought Amy’s paintings should be free for everyone to enjoy and Amy didn’t want any money, as just seeing people’s faces and hearing them talk about how much they liked her work was payment enough.

Some people in town decided that traveling so far was just not convenient for them though. They loved to see Amy’s work, but they rarely went so far out of town. One day one of Amy’s fans, Erma, overhearing some people talking about Amy’s paintings, got an idea! She went to Amy’s house and when no one was looking she took a snapshot of Amy’s latest work. She took the picture to a local copy shop and they printed out a picture that looked just like Amy’s painting. Erma told everyone on her side of town that they could now view Amy’s paintings at her house so they didn’t have to drive that long way every week. Every week she would return to Amy’s house and take a picture of her newest painting, go to the copy shop, and come home and hang it on her wall. She even had friends that would go and take the pictures for her! Soon everyone that lived in Erma’s part of town stopped going to Amy’s house and instead went to Erma’s because it was more convenient.

Amy noticed that a lot of the people that used to come and see her and her paintings weren’t coming anymore, but she didn’t say anything, because she didn’t want to upset her parents. She thought no one liked her pictures anymore – that no one liked her anymore. Amy’s parents were concerned and confused as to where all the visitors went, but they didn’t know what to think of it.

One day some friends showed them a flyer that advertised one of Amy’s paintings being shown at Erma’s house, so out of curiosity they took a ride to Erma’s to find out what it was all about. When they got there they couldn’t believe their eyes. There were copies of their daughter’s paintings all over the walls with hundreds of people smiling and complimenting them. They asked Erma to please stop copying their daughter’s work, because although they were flattered, as Amy would be, that so many people loved her paintings, what Amy really liked was seeing all the people that came to her house. With so many people now coming to Erma’s house, Amy would never get to see any of these people again. She was losing interest in painting altogether and was very sad. Erma didn’t realize what she had done and she immediately stopped copying Amy’s paintings. She thought that as long as they had Amy’s name on them it was ok. She apologized and said from now on when people asked her about Amy’s paintings she would give them the address to Amy’s house instead, so they could go see the paintings there. Even if it wouldn’t be as convenient for people, if they really liked Amy and her work they wouldn’t mind going those few extra miles, she surmised. Amy’s parents thanked Erma, and soon many of the people that had come to see Amy and her paintings before came back again. Amy was very happy and painted her best pictures ever!

Throughout the years there were other ‘Ermas’ in Webville that would try to make it more convenient for people that didn’t live near Amy to see her work. Most didn’t know what they were doing was wrong, but some did. Some even refused to take her paintings down when her parents asked! They liked having all the people come to their house so they continuted to copy her work. This made Amy very sad. She painted because she enjoyed it, but she liked sharing her work even more. She just wished people would not copy her paintings, but the only way she could stop them was by not painting anymore. She didn’t want to do that because she loved it so much, and that would be punishing herself for something that she didn’t even do. Instead she sent letters to all the people that were copying her work and asked them not to do it. When that didn’t work she went to the Webville Town Hall and made a plea to the townspeople to come see the paintings at her house because she missed them all so much. It worked and everyone in Webville lived happily ever after!

The End

I don’t really think I need to point out the moral of this story. It was not written to chastise anyone, but more so to inform those that are not aware of all the hard work that is put into creating original content, where the only payment that is expected is perhaps a kind word, to pass along the URL of the content, or to just return to view more. For those that knowingly allow copyrighted material to be copied and pasted onto their sites or forums, please forbid it in the future.

Fair use, in regards to copyright means quoting a SMALL amount to discuss and/or gain interest along with a link to the original article, not reposting the ENTIRE thing.

Thanks to David Bloomberg at RealityNewsOnline.com for explaining copyright to me, way back when.

Troll's Trolls

We are not sure exactly what is going on at BBInsider but whatever it is - it is extremely amusing. Almost every post on the board is now Zeb related - well actually every post claims to be authored by Zeb, one of his numerous aliases, or by his use of other poster's names.

Though we are sure that all of those posts can't actually be from Zeb (or can they?), it is really hard to tell which is which. Seems Zeb is blaming Digilady, Flint, Nos, Soeur, Elitist, and just about anyone else he has held a grudge against.

Our amusement stems from the fact that it seems our troll has acquired his own contingent of trolls.

As a side note: It seems that though Zeb has said goodbye to our messageboard several times, he continues to troll and post to it.

First Week of October

The following is the first weekly submission by Reality TV Fans about their site.

Our most popular forum seems to be The Mole 2.  Everyone is studying the taped episodes over and over again to look for hidden clues as to the mole’s identity. The board is filled with posters’ ideas of what the clues could be and who is the Mole.

Our funniest new poster is JP.  He has been posting great recaps on the Love Cruise forum, and we’re publishing them under our Episode Guides section as well.  They are very witty.  Here is an example from one of his most recent recaps:

Lisa: "I'm worried for Toni, Andrea. I think Greg wants me, the aging, dour, homely, dumpy, pathetic Yenta with the inferiority complex, and not really the fun schiksa blonde with the double d boobs, the three of whom which with he spends all of his time."

Andrea (then to Toni): "Gee, Toni, I think Greg is, like, not really loyal to you and wants the ugliest girl on the boat instead."

Toni: "Oh, wow. Like, I was so blind. Let's kick him off the boat, my girls!"

If you like that, there's a whole lot more here.

You can't talk about the posters at RealityTVfans.com without mentioning Infidel In The Temple.  He does not like reality shows, especially ones that require other contestants to vote their counterparts off.  We love him anyway and his posts although mostly thought provoking, do show a sense of humor at times.

Our troll of the week, who does not have a screen name, did not post on the boards but rather emailed the Editor and complained to her for publishing an article that he claims was a spoiler about the first one kicked off Survivor 3.  We stand behind not labeling the article as a spoiler, as it is not based on fact, but instead speculation. However, our reply fell on deaf ears and the person has (gasp) threatened to never visit our site again!

LuckyLynn has been voted by our members as having the funniest posts. She is also a favorite sparring partner with Infidel in the Temple, albeit a friendly spar.

Grundy has been voted as being our most knowledgeable poster.

Supershirll has previously been recognized at RealityTrash as ‘poster of the week’ and she deserves it.  She does visit many reality TV site boards and post, but we love her so much at RTVF that we're willing to share.  Her most recent topic on our Love Cruise forum - Do I hate Lisa?  Yes I do... is just an example of how she will tell you exactly what she thinks.

There are many more members of our forums that deserve to be recognized, and next time I'll introduce you to some more of them.

Be sure to sign up for our Survivor contest on our forums by October 25th.  The prize is an awesome RTVF sweatshirt, and make sure to read the rules first. :

We’re also working hand in hand with ABC to help promote The Mole II, and in addition to interviewing the latest victim of the mole in our Interviews section every week, we will be holding live chats with the latest evicted player every Friday at 4pm PST (7pm ET, 6pm CST, 5pm MST), so be sure to stop in to say hi to the mole’s second victim, Ali, this coming Friday.

Until next week,

Jacalynn and Marci – RTVF Trash Reporters

Dregs and Dross

We were somewhat disappointed when we went to Reality TV Addicts after reading about their site and found out you had to register to view their message board. We even tried registering, and got a nice e-mail saying our request to join was denied. Luckily, however, we tried again this morning and found we could view the site - I guess there must have been some technical problems with the ezboard software.

In like manner, we tried finding the Reality411 board. We were also denied membership at that message board. We are not sure if this is technical problems or not, but we still can't get in to see what's happening.

Our message board has been hopping with recent events. We don't mind the controversial topics, but please do not post personal information, posts from other sites, or personal e-mails. Also no personal attacks against other posters and do not use profanity. Thanks.

Favorite Poster: Elite TV's SnowRaven

Though things have slowed down on all the reality tv sites, we find that SnowRaven is keeping things hopping over at Elite TV. Taking the high road in entertainment, this poster has started a very interesting "quotation" game in which someone gives the starting line of a literary work, and posters try to guess the name and author.

This is enough for us to present SnowRaven with this issue's Favorite Poster!

Have some trash? Send it to us!

If you have some good scoop on the reality web scene, or want to nominate a favorite poster, send it to us at realitytrash@yahoo.com and we will try to get it into our next issue. And thanks to all of you who have contributed!
