Jokers Sits in Judgment

By Juez N. Jurado

In the past week Jokers Updates has come under indictment by their regulars. We have observed no less than seven complaints from posters like Roxie, a poster Jokers’ readers have openly praised for giving a “real feel” for the BB action. Roxie and others do not care for the heavy-hand of Jokers’ moderators who add and subtract from updates, seemingly at will. A newer visitor, Amanda, posted this on their Questions board, “I’m almost terrified to even report anything for fear you will DELETE or MODERATE or CENSOR comments.”

Everyone seems to understand Jokers’ defensive posture. As an unregistered, public site, trolls frequently attack causing the moderators to sometimes throw the baby out with the bath water – the good posts out with the bad. But we wonder, during times when trolls are sleeping under the bridge, do the moderators overmoderate just to have something to do?

Among the complaints are accusations (and evidence) that Jokers mods are the grammar police. Some questioned that if the mods were going to change what they write why don’t they just do the updates themselves? After all, posters are all volunteers.

And on Jokers taking themselves too seriously, posters sniped that Jokers is “not the FBI or CIA” and “not the N.Y. Times or The Washington Post.” In other words, lighten up.

Jokers is polite in responses to those who complain on the Questions board but admits to being moody and inconsistent. An apologetic moderator defended editing saying, “It is up to the individual moderator how much personal comment is allowed in an update. Therefore, it depends which moderator is on duty . . . I'm certain that my mood today (with the annoying troll/disruptive person) had something to do with my impatience . . . and I hope you can understand and forgive me! ;)” ( “;)” is known as a wink on the net. Was the wink meant to be cute or to imply the apology is not sincere?)

Still many others on the PX accuse Jokers of deleting unfavorable posts. One poster summed it up, “Now let's see how long before the mods delete this well-reasoned post.”

JokersUpdates.com is one of the top-rated sites for updates, often ranking first or second on the Big Brother Top 50. In the world of Big Brother Web they are the proverbial conglomerate, the big boys! They get criticized for over moderating and under moderating. Most of their effort goes into cleaning up racist, pornographic, anti-religious, anti-gay and other disruptive posts. Regardless the question remains from their well-behaved regulars, “With all your problems, why are you majoring in the minors by editing legitimate posts?” ;) wink wink

(Editor's note: Please welcome our new reporter Juez N. Jurado. We hope to see many more articles from him in the future!)

TVClubhouse Roars Back

After being removed from the Big Brother Top 50 ranking list for presumably placing the counting code on a message board page, the TVClubhouse reapplied to the list and were reinstated.

Within the week, the site has roared back into the top rankings, making it to its current place at number 4 in astonishing time. Averaging at least 2,500 unique hits a day, the site seems a solid shoe-in to keep the number 4 spot.

We have noticed that TVCH is using a variation of the pop-under technique that Elite TV used with such success. But as the saying goes, all's fair in love and war.

Congratulations TVCH!

Big Brother SA Overwhelmed

By Juez N. Jurado

Big Brother South Africa (BBSA) launched its first broadcast and companion website to overwhelming success but they weren’t ready for the popularity! 35,000 viewers registered on BigBrotherSA.com at a rate of three per second the first day bogging down the site to a crawl.

Commented Willie Visser, Head of Big Brother Online at M-Net: “The local and international interest in the Big Brother SA web site has far exceeded our expectations. . . .” (Read story)

Many BB USA addicts have tried to load the free live feeds but few have had success. We visited the BBSA chat room to find out why the feeds will not play in Media Player and found out the producers underestimated needed bandwidth and chose to broadcast in multicast, a format not supported by some ISPs even in South Africa. South African fans are complaining loudly. The site’s boards are filled with complaints.

The BBSA website promises remedies are in the works. Plans include mirror sites and increased bandwidth.

We’ve noticed increased interest in BBSA from USA fans as the CBS production winds down. Twenty percent of registered visitors to the site are “international” (outside of S.A.) One BBSA chat room visitor named Scott said, “I’m addicted to our [USA] BB and was hoping to start watching yours when ours is over.” International fans will only be able to watch two of the feeds provided – Director’s Choice 1 and 2.

Rumor has it that Elite TV may create an area for BBSA like they did for BBOZ (Australia.)

From Our Mailbox

Just a couple of snippets from our overflowing mailbox.

From a happy reader:

"I just wanted to openly thank you for opening my eyes regarding the censorship going on at BBFC. They had recently moderated a post that had masked its profanity regarding the potential of CBS and Arnold Shapiro editing Nicole's weekend tantrums. "...

"I don't care if you use this in your next edition or not. I just wanted to say that had you not brought it up, I wouldn't have been so curious. Thanks again. "

Editor: Thanks for the letter, but I think the real person you should thank is the originator of that article, NewsFlash. We didn't really think it was such a big deal :)

From a not so happy reader:

"Please respond and advise me on whom gave you explicit permission to take my userName from another website and freely post it at your website. It was not taken with any previous written permission from me, and I would have appreciated asking me first. "

"In terms of your "news item", my posts in the folder which you refer to were legitimate questions to Kent. He responded to them, and I felt he clarified things at least for myself. I think it is unfair to infer that I chased him from the website, or lump me with other posters whom I truly don't know at the website - who may have some other problem with the man. For my own query, I felt Kent answered in kind. "

Editor: Sorry, but by posting on a public message board, your username becomes a matter of public record. As far as your actions on the website you refer to, we just call them as we see them.

Favorite Poster: Elite TV's Vinceg2

Breaking into the live feed scene with a splash when the houseguests were joined by Ophelia, Elite TV's Vinceg2 made Big Brother history with his obsession with the diminutive porker and his now famous Pig Posts.

Now a real fixture at the site, Vince joins Mishi and Realguy as one of our favorite live feed posters at the site.

And if the rumours are true, Vince's dedication to the site has garnered him a real promotion in reality tv-land. Stop by the Elite TV chat and ask him about his new title.
